Recruiting relationships are deeply personal. They contain our private notes and thoughts, but have also resulted in many of humanity's greatest careers. It's a deeply rich and personal medium supporting a depth and diversity of human potential.

Applicant Tracking Systems and the web

Today, we do much of our hiring on computers, but the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) has taken over it. On the one hand, it makes sense, because the web is so engaging and powerful. But there are two big problems. First, it's a tool for managing, not connecting.

1 The Clutter of Complexity. Most recruiting software has become bloated. Features upon features are piled on top of each other until the human element is buried under dropdown menus and required fields. We spend more time feeding the database than feeding the relationships that actually drive hiring.

2 The Loss of Agency. Second, it's not personal. It's taken our data and splattered it all over the web. Candidates become rows in a spreadsheet, and recruiters become data entry clerks. The "tracking" in Applicant Tracking System has become literal—we track people like packages, rather than treating them like professionals.
